A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO EPUBS

Content Creation Considerations

You present your story differently in these two formats. Therefore, you source material, organise it and write differently for each medium.

Content Creation Planning Phase

The content creation planning phase is the most important, whether your publication takes shape as a PDF or an ePub. Reflect on the ultimate purpose of what you will write, the language you will employ and who will read it.

Example 1

How to deliver survey results to targeted audiences? The approach of the NTM survey team is a three-part strategy:

  1. Redesign PDFs to communicate a story with graphics, grouped by topic;
  2. Use PDFs and printed copies for audiences that are more used to reading in that format or have limited Internet access;
  3. Design new ePub content which tracks the impact stories around these publications, targeting them to developed country audiences.

Example 2

The Commercial Diplomacy team has taken a similar approach. The key purpose of this content is training and building awareness. It therefore:

  1. Continues using PDF content, and is commissioning it into Arabic;
  2. Continues to combine the PDF with the SME Trade Academy course and customised training;
  3. Develops a new ePub that delivers key content targeted to diplomats, introduces a new character that complements the successful character in the book, and also adds content related to operating in and beyond the pandemic.
Remember, ePubs are resource hungry in terms of time and cost, so it’s important to consider the ideal word count from the very beginning.

In each case, the teams made a detailed analysis of what content might work in which format: training seminars, PDFs, print publications and ePubs. They considered tone, language, Internet culture, reactions to existing content and how to combine and distribute content. They then looked at the information structure to communicate their messages.

As a result, the ePub is emerging as a new technical cooperation mode of delivery, as well as a marketing tool.
