A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO EPUBS

Ideal Content Length: ePub vs PDF

Firstly, reflect on the amount of content you expect your publication to have:

More than 10,000 words

(at least 20 printed pages of A4)

An ePub may not be the right format. Consider an HTML content hub or a PDF. Either way, select essential content and sharpen messages before submission, according to principles outlined in ITC courses (Writing for Clarity, Writing for Impact).

Between 4,000 and 10,000 words

(Between 8 and 20 printed pages of A4)

Restructure and sharpen the storytelling outline. Cut text. Review graphics to see what could tell the story visually in place of the words you have cut.

Less than 4,000 words

(up to 8 printed pages of A4)

Good news! Your content length is suitable for an ePub. Identify graphics that can help tell the story.

Text should be divided into small sections to facilitate distribution, increase user engagement and help improve design.

In addition to word count considerations, evaluate if your key message will function on an ePub. Content should be visual and work in unison with multimedia elements, like videos or animated graphs, for example. It should also benefit from interaction to reveal key ideas on hover, click or automatically by navigating through the ePub.
